Portable Applications on a USB Stick

Now you can carry your favorite computer programs along with all of your bookmarks, settings, email and more with you. Use them on any Windows computer. All without leaving any personal data behind.
Tom Wilson has been using portable applications for several years, will demonstrate several of his favorite applications by plugging his USB stick into a laptop.

As usual, there will be a “Random Access” session to discuss Windows problems and solutions.

Spring Cleaning is overdue, now that Summer is three weeks old. Kevin will demonstrate his favorite utilities for cleanup, checkup, consolidation and backup.

Microsoft Office 2010 Suite

 Microsoft launched Office 2010, Sharepoint 2010 and Visual Studio 2010 in May to business customers, and the products will be available in retail stores on June 10. Comparisons of the different versions of Office, and their recommendation of the most cost-effective versions will be discussed. Kevin Lynn and Don Heinsen will demonstrate the new features of Office 2010, with powerpoint presentation and hands-on examples of many of the features of Office 2010 Professional 2010.

Home Networking and Network Attached Storage

Kevin will demonstrate a Networked Attached Storage (NAS) box with 4 internal SATA hard drives in a RAID 5 array for safe backup of his files. He will also show a Microsoft Windows Home Server he built - using a medium speed dual-core PC with 2 SATA drives - that he can access from anywhere on the internet. As usual, there will be a general session at the beginning of the meeting to discuss possible solutions to member questions.

Troubleshooting Windows 7 Installations

There are lots of web pages and advice to be found by simply  entering "Trouble-Shooting Windows 7 Installation" in a Google (or Bing) search box. Google about 22,800,000 entries,
Bing found 8,900,000.

Kevin will focus on cleaning up and speeding up a Windows 7 installation on a Laptop using msconfig and easy BCD. He will also discuss Vista and XP problems, especially dual-boot.

In this session in our series on building your own PC, Kevin will present a detailed discussion of  the quad-core Intel i7 processors and some of the ASUS socket 1366 boards which are available for this chip. This will be the last SVCS session prior to the actual BYOPC workshop at Microcenter.
